Lighting Design

Designing spaces are impossible without light. Lighting design defines the space, source of light, lighting effect, and overall mood and atmosphere to the interior or exterior spaces. Our lighting designers provide support to architects, interior designers and electrical engineers in the U.A.E. As lighting designers, our responsibilities are to perform exact LUX level calculations and modeling for LED light sources and best lighting effects.

1. Initial design meeting

Kick start meeting with the client, architect, interior designer and electrical engineer to understand lighting requirements. These meetings are designed to understand the details of design, and ascertain exactly what the project needs for effective implementation.

Our initial design meetings are structured to discuss the following important points:

● Lighting design directions from Architects & Interior Designers
● Basic lighting layout discussion
● Lighting control options
● Project program and coordination

2. Basic concept and luminaires selection

Our team starts working on the basic lighting design, including defining the type of luminaires needed, setting standards and determining design mood, concept and scheme as per consultant’s recommendations and pre-planned lighting layout. All these are decided at the initial design meeting.

3. Lighting Calculations

On securing approval on types of luminaires and basic layouts, lighting calculations are carried out by our expert lighting designers using advanced lighting design software’s like DIALUX 3.14 and DIALUX Evo to acquire design outcomes and functionality.

4. Detailed concept and report generation

Immediately following successful lighting calculations, comprehensive LUX levels reports, along with different isometric and 3D views are submitted for the architect and consultant’s approval. Design changes, variation and recommendations are incorporated in accordance with project requirements.

5. On- site support and commission

Final deliverables are handed over to the MEP contractors for execution after a successful lighting design process. On-site support and supervision are provided to complete the project as per desired outcome.

We provide lighting design services for below areas.

Indoor Lighting Design

We follow the following steps to ensure an effective lighting design:

  • Identifying the requirements

  • Determining the method of lighting

  • Selecting the correct lighting equipment

  • Calculating the lighting parameters

  • Meeting lighting standards as per CIBSE, SSL and LEED standards. These standards include intensity,
    uniformity and contrast ratios.

  • Lighting Design Adjustment

  • Lighting Control System

Outdoor Lighting Design

Some outdoor lights that can help you achieve desired results include:

  1. Pathway Lights: This is the most common type of landscape lighting. Task lights are mostly used to illuminate walkways and passages.

  2. Ceiling and Hanging Lights: These are mostly used for outdoor sitting areas, pergola and balconies. Ceiling and hanging lights are normally IP rated with IK rating of 8 (IK 8) and above.

  3. Wall Lights: Wall lights are used for exterior façade, exterior villa, wall lights, car porch entry, or villa entry for ambient or accent lighting, rather than focus bright light.

  4. Post Lights: As the name suggests, post lights are mounted on top of a post or structure. They are mainly used for entries, gates, fences, or around the decks.

  5. Landscape Lights: Landscape lights are also known as spike lights. They are used to create layers of lights such as flood, narrow spot or wall grazing. Spotlights can be used for featuring several outdoor elements like trees, bushes, buildings, sculptures, trees and flower pots. Sometimes landscape lights are used with RGB color combinations for more effect. IP rated (IP65, IP66 & IP67), low voltage (12 or 24 AC/DC) power connections are necessary for safety reasons.

  6. Deck and Steps Lights: These are used directly in the yard, near swimming pool areas, hardscape, and decks. Step lights, neon flex or LED strips installed inside aluminum profiles are used to produce both task and accent lighting on steps and walking areas.

Façade Lighting Design

Wall grazing and wall wash effect is used to highlight the fine texture of timber and natural stone. Uniform lighting is achieved by using wide-angle flood lights and wall-washers on the ground, mast, or surface.

Façade Lighting Design Process

  1. Kick start meeting with the client, architect, and interior/exterior designers to understand design outcomes

  2. Initial design approval using Adobe Photoshop and video editing to approve the design concept.

  3. Proof of concept with actual light fittings IES files from the manufacturer.

  4. Defining lighting control, lighting layouts, and power distribution diagrams for installation.

  5. Installation supervision

Façade Lighting Techniques

  1. In-ground up-lighters can be used to give façade a rhythmic structure, while ground recessed luminaires can be used close to the structure to generate grazing light that emphasizes the structure of the façade.

  2. Surface-mounted up-lights, downlights, and up-down lights can be used to generate grazing effects on façade surfaces, and a combination of different light beams and color temperatures can be chosen as per façade surface details.

  3. RGBW lights in the form of LED pixels light, RGBW linear profiles, and RGB LED flex can be used to give dynamic lighting effects on the façade. Intelligent control systems like DMX Control can be used to control the effects.

Retail Lighting Design

This is why we have the best minds and hands on ground to provide appropriate lighting for retail spaces that want to increase their sales and show their top products to visitors, while maintaining a space that is cozy and easy to navigate. We use light magic to create various luminance levels, light distributions and light contrast to ensure that shoppers enjoy an unforgettable experience.

The application of narrow beam angles and various optic options gives emphasis to the products’ three-dimensional nature and creates brilliance of surfaces. At the same time, our high-color-rendering (CRI) LED light fixtures highlight the quality of the products. Retail customers enjoy relaxing ancillary areas in our designs because we apply warm, low light points to relax the mind and ensure an enjoyable shopping.

Retail Lighting Techniques

  1. Use correct combination of four types of lights (accent, task, ambient and decorative) to create desired effects.

  2. Brightness and tones (color temperature) can play a vital role in retail lighting by providing adequate lighting needs for products.

  3. Highlight your products (merchandise) with accent lighting.

  • Brighten your space with task lights.

  • Add interest with decorative lighting.

  • Fill the gap with ambient lighting.

  • Enhance functionality by selecting appropriate lamps for your space

  • Different types of lighting fixtures, such as recessed, surface and suspended fixtures can be used as per lighting requirement and design outcomes.

Sports Lighting Design

Sports Lighting Design Techniques

One must consider the speed of games, vertical and horizontal illumination, broadcasting, camera recording and glare, and recommended LUX levels for sports activity levels in classes I, II and III. These classifications are derived from the level of competition: international, national, regional, local, training and recreational.

Sports Lighting Requirement

In order to provide a safe space for sports, adequate lighting for viewership and broadcasting are required for an enjoyable experience, sports arenas should be lit appropriately religiously adhering to the following requirements.

  1. Illumination requirements- Sports lighting design is aimed at meeting the needs of sporting activity; therefore, it is necessary to maintain a certain brightness in all directions of a certain space, and it is necessary to meet the requirements for uniform light distribution on the ground (horizontal illuminance) and above the ground (vertical illuminance) consistently.
  2. Illumination uniformity- The faster the athletes move and the smaller the exercise equipment, the stricter the requirements for vertical illumination, illumination uniformity, and illumination gradient.
  3. Brightness and Glare – Brightness and Glare are important to the visual comfort of athletes and spectators. To avoid a background that is too dark, part of the light should be directed to the stands. This not only reduces the glare of the audience on the opposite stand, but also makes the TV picture more favorable because of a bright background.
  4. Shadow effect- The strong contrast of brightness and shadows hinders the correct adjustment of TV cameras and athletes’ perception. Any setting that is too dark or too bright will increase visual discomfort.

Industrial Lighting Design

The premise of the industrial light design is visual comfort, task lighting, and safety of workers. Areas (such as storage spaces) that contain flammable materials require special ATEX-certified explosion proof lighting fixtures.

Industrial lighting design process

We provide complete LUX levels calculations as per target LUX levels requirements, and uniformity with the help of DIALUX Evo. Our industrial lighting designs consider heavy machinery location, storage rack heights, and positions during the lighting design process to increase functionality.

Industrial lighting design techniques

Industrial light fixtures are used in factories, warehouses and manufacturing plants. They are more efficient than traditional halogen, incandescent and fluorescent lamps. There are several types of industrial LED light fixtures, and each has been designed for specific applications.

They are:

● High-bay fixtures can be used from 20 to 45-meter height, with medium or wide beam angles.

● Low-bay fixtures can be used from 12 to 20 meters height, with medium or wide beam angles along with decorative reflectors.

● Linear high-bay fixtures are used for specific lighting requirements. These fittings can be used with normal, wide beam angles (symmetric beam angle), or in special cases, asymmetric beam angles.

● Flood light fixtures can be used on ceilings, walls and beam structures, LED wall packs and outdoor lights.
